The Franschhoek Wine Tram is a fun tour that takes you across the picturesque Cape Winelands on a historic tram line. This tour can be enjoyed by locals and visitors of all ages, and is perfect for a day out in one of Cape Town’s most beautiful regions.
Tours depart from the Wine Tram ticket office, which is situated in Franschhoek Square on the Main Road. The tram is modelled on the 1890 open-sided Brill Trams, with updated features such as green efficiency to bring it up to date with modern times. Tour-goers can enjoy the same vintage charm throughout the journey however, which includes wine tasting and visits of some of the country’s top estates.
Franschhoek Wine Tram Routes
There are two routes to choose from, each departing at different times from the Wine Tram station. Times and estates visited on each of these routes include the following:
1. The Blue Line
Departing times: 10h00, 11h00, 12h00 and 13h00
Wine estates visited on the Blue Line route include La Bri, Holden Manz, Dieu Donne, Chamonix, Rickety Bridge and Grande Provence.
2. The Red Line
Departing times: 10h30, 11h30, 12h30 and 13h30
Wine estates visited on the Red Line route include Mont Rochelle, La Couronne, Moreson, Leopard’s Leap, Rickety Bridge and Grande Provence.
Wine Tram Tour Information
- Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office. Basic tours cost R170 for adults and R85 for children between 2 and 17 years old (under 2’s travel for free). There are also transfer packages available – click here to view rates.
- Transfers can be organised from various pick-up points in the city. This is ideal for those who wish to be collected from their accommodation and be transferred to Franschhoek for the tour, and taken back once the tour has finished.
- Various additional activities can be enjoyed on the tour. These range from wine tasting and cellar tours to vineyard walks, cheese tasting, children’s activities, photo taking and many other fun things to do.
- Lunch can be enjoyed only if bookings are made 24 hours ahead. This is not included in the cost.
