What To Do In Cape Town After The New Year Parties

Life in Cape Town settles down into its high summer rhythms after the fun and festivities of Christmas and New Year.

Cricket in Cape Town

Cricket at Newlands

For a city like Cape Town that thrives on the outdoors, the summer sun shines down on a myriad of sporting events including cricket at Newlands; Sri Lanka are visiting for the 3rd Test starting on Tuesday 3rd January 2012.

The excitement of the game spills out from every café and bar, where the game is shown on a multitude of televisions.  The question on everyone’s lips is, “What’s the score?”  Don’t miss a ball, even if you can’t be sitting on the grass embankments surrounding the pitch or in one of the shady stands!

The J & B Met is held towards the end of the month over at Kenilworth Racecourse.  The major horseracing event of the year is run on the 28th January 2012 and is a must in your diary for the place to be seen.  Fashionistas, celebrities, entertainment and colour in abundance will be on show alongside the glossy thoroughbreds racing around the track – not an event to be missed for those keen to place a bet or two.

Aside from sport, the beaches are doing a roaring trade.  With the summer season in full swing on the exclusive beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay, you may decide to find one of the equally beautiful beaches that are less crowded, such as Noordhoek, or Llandudno.

Although a little more off the beaten track, where you will find more space to stretch out, walk or perhaps swim or surf, you may, of course, find the facilities will not be quite to the same standard.

Table Bay

Big Bay at Blauuberg is however, a beach paradise.  With its new shopping mall, great surfing, windsurfing and kiteboarding, the whole family will find something to entertain and enjoy.

With iconic views of Table Mountain and Robben Island, this is a delightful small town with West Coast whitewashed homes, bright light perfect for artists and a bohemian air.  Where better to spend a day at the beach?

For a chance to get away from the beach, why not consider taking a trip to the Classic Car & Bike Show held annually at Plumstead.  Featuring some of the rarest and most beautiful cars and bikes, the show also hosts Hot Rods, racing cars, and motorcycles.

Here, yesteryears (and some of today’s specialities) vehicles are the motor industry’s thoroughbreds.  Cape Town covers them all!
