October is upon us and there is so much going on in Cape Town. However, there are many excellent events taking place just outside the city gates and everyone is invited to join. From a wine marathon where you drink bubbly instead of water to a craft beer festival in Stellenbosch and a spectacular festival on Sandringham Rdwhere you can get up close to 300 different farm animals, there is plenty to look forward to around Cape Town this weekend.
1 The Cape Wine Marathon (October 12)
This is definitely not your standard marathon. Starting at Meerendal Wine Estate, the Cape Wine Marathon takes you through some of the most picturesque destinations in Cape Winelands and offers a 42km, 21km, 10km, and 5km run. Instead of drinking water at each point, you will be greeted with wine, food, and treats.

2 Elgin Blossom Weekend (October 12-13)
The Bee Effect and Elgin Grabouw Tourism are inviting you to join the Elgin Blossom Weekend which features everything from tastings to spring blossom themed activities. Whether you wish to enjoy vineyard walks, go on a river barge cruise, or attend an outdoor yoga session, the Elgin Blossom has it all. Visitors with kids will be happy to hear that children’s fun-filled activities such as kite flying, jumping castles, and tractor rides will be available.

3 The Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival (October 12)
Showcasing some of the best local craft distilleries and microbreweries, The Stellenbosch Craft Beer Festival is a bi-annual gathering hosted at the Jan Marais Nature Reserve. Besides beer tasting, visitors can grab delicious dishes from food trucks. Since this is a family-friendly festival, expect to find children activities like face painting, jungle gyms, and jumping castle. Tickets for the event range from R65 for children to R105 per adult.

4 Chapman’s Peak Half Marathon 2019 (October 13)
We have another marathon even on our list of things to do around Cape Town this weekend. The Chapman’s Peak Half Marathon offers a 10km and a 21 km race along the picturesque Chapmans Peak Drive to Noordhoek and back to Hout Bay. If you decide to join the marathon, you’ll have a chance to run along one of the world’s most beautiful marine drives. Of course, during the race, Chapman’s Peak Drive will be closed to all traffic.

5 The Groot Plaasbroe (October 12-13)
If you are interested in getting up close to more than 300 different farm animals and wish to try unique food creations like Karoo lamb kebabs, skaapstertjies, and Wagyu hamburgers, you’ll want to pay a visit to the third annual Groot Plaasbroe festival. Braai competitions will be held on-site, as well as pony rides for children. You can also take part in an ice-cream eating completion and try local wine and gin. This is one of the most anticipated events around Cape Town this weekend and tickets cost R120 per person.
