Think of Cape Town and one immediately thinks of sun, sea and sand. As one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, the city has an enviable reputation for offering it’s visitors soft sand, warm waters and mild breezes coupled with a vibrant, city buzz.
The beauty of the beaches in Cape Town is that they are all of them different and offer the visitor varied experiences. From the Blue Flag beaches of the aptly named Bikini Beach at Gordon’s Bay situated on the eastern side of the Table Mountain range and Clifton Beach to Big Bay at Bloubergstrand on the western coast.
Come with me whilst I introduce you to some real gems!
The first thing for me to tell you is the diversity between the two coasts of the peninsula. Down the centre of the finger of land jutting into the oceans lies the massive structure of the iconic Table Mountain range culminating at Cape Point with the merging of the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic.
The False Bay Indian Ocean side tends to be warmer water by some three to four degrees influencing the marine life and activities. Although generalizing is always a risk, these beaches appeal to families with children for their safe bathing off gently sloping foreshores and calmer waters protected by the huge sweep of the False Bay promontories.
Muizenberg combines the long sandy beaches with waves whipped up to create sufficient height to learn to surf and it is here that you will want to venture out on the long, flat boards and try to stand on the waves crashing to shore!
Muizenberg operates a very safe environment to learn to surf with safety of its visitors paramount. Follow their do’s and don’ts and you can’t go wrong. Ignore the warnings at your peril.
Around on the other side of the coast, you come to the more sophisticated and fashionable beaches of Clifton and Camps Bay. Amazingly enough for a city with the beauty of Cape Town, the four beaches of Clifton are uninspiringly called 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th! That’s not the picture of the reality though.
For beaches to see and be seen on, these are the best! Beautiful people from around the world flock here to play on the stunning white sands and anchor their yachts in the calm, turquoise blue waters. Eat in the cosmopolitan cafes and restaurants and enjoy the delights of Africa in bewitching surroundings – a people-watchers paradise.
For long beach walks, safe bathing and tanning opportunities, Milnerton offers West Coast hospitality with the impressive backdrop of Table Mountain itself, cradled in Table Bay with views towards Table View and Bloubergstrand.
You will be able to pick out these beaches from the myriad of colourful sails from the kite-surfers and a visit is a must for the water babies amongst us! Surfing, kitesurfing and shopping combine in the exciting lifestyle destination of Big Bay where only the beach separates them.
