From one of the largest beer festivals in South Africa to the spectacular whale festival in the nearby Hermanus, Capetonians are spoilt for choice on the last weekend of September. 1 Tops at Spar Bierfest (September 28-29)

Celebrating its eight-year, Tops at Spar Bierfest is an Oktoberfest-inspired festival of Bavarian beer and culture in Cape Town. Expect to find everything from specially-made beers to lederhosen, pigtails, a wide range of traditional on-site beer competitions, and dirndls. To keep you entertained, South Africa’s party band the Rockerfellas scheduled to perform at the festival. Keep in mind that the event is open only to adults. 2 Two Oceans Hermanus Whale Festival (September 28-30)

To escape the urban life of the Cape Town city center, head out to the small coastal town of Hermanus where the annual Two Oceans Hermanus Whale Festival is taking place for 28th time in a row. Both residents and visitors are here to celebrate the migration of Southern Right Whales and a variety of other marine wildlife. Get ready for a wide range of ocean-themed activities, eco-marine talks about penguins and whales, entertainment for children, and plenty of delicious food. Make sure to stick around for the popular Street Parade on Saturday morning.

3 Last Night of the Proms (September 29-30)

If you are into light classical music, see the Proms Orchestra and massed choirs perform at the City Hall this weekend. The famous maestro Richard Cock will conduct this fabulous classical music concert and you can expect to hear masterpieces from Leonard Bernstein, Hugh Masekela, Richard and Joseph Strauss, and Tchaikovsky. The second part of the program will include lucky draw prizes and a chance to win a two-night stay at the Stanford Valley Guest Farm for two and uniquely designed pieces of jewelry from Peter Gilder Jewellers. The tickets to this event cost between R250 and R300.

4 The Freshpak Fitness Festival 2018 (September 29)

One of the most popular multi-sport events in South Africa, the Freshpak Fitness Festival will take place in Clanwilliam on 29 September. From challenging routes and scenic outdoor surroundings to competitions in a wide range of running, cycling, and swimming challenges, there are plenty of activities to look forward to. If you are planning to visit with children, sign them up for the fun FitKids challenge that includes 1km run, 200m swim, and 1km run.

5 Cape Orchid Society Spring Show (September 28-30)

There are so many interesting events in Cape Town this weekend and the Cape Orchid Society Spring Show is definitely one of our favorite festivals in September. This year’s Spring themed show the Potting Shed offers an opportunity for visitors to have their orchids re-potted by the best orchid growers in South Africa. While the professionals are re-potting your orchids for just R10, you can visit the sales area and admire the lovely display of exotic and unusual orchids.
