Did you know that ten years ago there was only one independent brewery in South Africa’s Mother City? Well, things have changed over the last couple of years and today Cape Town is home to more than 20 breweries that produce a wide range of craft beers. Are you into IPA crafts or prefer good old lager from the tap? Whatever the answer, these breweries in Cape Town have you covered.
1 Devil’s Peak Brewing Company
Located close to the city center, Cape Town’s Devil’s Peak Brewing Company offers some of the most original craft beers in the Mother City. This brewery is famous for its delicious hop-forward IPA, First Light Golden Ale, Woodhead Amber Ale, and The King’s Blockhouse IPA. Their taproom is a restaurant and pub where visitors can try all of their beers and enjoy some of the well-crafted dishes like cider-glazed pork belly and cheeseburgers.
2 Darling Brew
One of the most popular breweries in Cape Town, Darling Brew boasts an impressive range of ales, lagers, and special brews. They have a tasting room which overlooks the brewery where you can enjoy a beer tasting experience and also see how they make their beers. Besides a nice selection of beers, a braai inspired menu, as well as platters and bar snacks are available at this amazing brewery in Darling. Our favorite beers here at the Darling Brew include Native Ale and Slow Beer.
3 Woodstock Brewery
Situated in the industrial suburb of Woodstock, this popular brewery is well-known for its seasonal ales and offers guided tours and tastings. Their award-winning hazelnut brown ale is a major success and they even have limited releases of a variety both ales and lagers. The taproom is open from Tuesday to Saturday and has a lovely beer garden which overlooks the brewery. In case you get hungry, you can order some local specialties at their Woodstock Grill and Tap.
4 Jack Black’s Brewing Co.
Founded in 2007, Jack Black’s Brewing Co. is one of the oldest and largest independent breweries in Cape Town. Make sure to try their American-style IPA and the unfiltered Pilsner at their taproom which is open from Wednesday to Saturday. The good news is that both tours and tastings are available for guests and the taproom also hosts quiz nights and live music performances throughout the week. The head Chef Clara Bubenzer is in charge of preparing delicious food and if you wish to purchase a souvenir, they sell caps and t-shirts here.
5 Aegir Project Brewery
Located just a short drive from the Victoria and Albert Waterfront in the suburb of Noordhoek, Aegir Project Brewery is a boutique brewery that features a quaint taproom and produces a range of creative brews with nicely designed labels and interesting names. They are a small operation and only have 5 beers available including Steam Beer, Rye beer, IPA (Indian Pale Ale), Extra Pale Ale (Uil) and a London style Porter. Of course, they also produce seasonal and specialty beers on special occasions. What we like about this place is that they don’t use any additives and their beer is 100% natural. Besides tasty beers, they also serve gourmet hot dogs and truffle-infused fries.
