Cape Town Summer school holiday events

Hey everyone, and happy 2014! Today, I am taking a quick time-out from my holiday to share some tips on surviving the Cape Town summer school holidays, after coming across a rather desperate plea for kid-friendly event suggestions on my social feed.

The end-of-year holidays are time for everyone to relax, unwind and soak up some sun. But while some are lucky enough to get leave over this time, others still have to juggle work with kids, social events and seasonal celebrations. By the time January rolls around, it becomes even more challenging to keep everyone happy and entertained.

With this in mind, I thought it was a good time to share some events, holiday programmes and other ongoing things for kids to do in Cape Town that will keep mom and dad calm while still giving the ‘littlies’ plenty to do.

Cape Town Summer School Holiday Events & Activities

Here are some events that are taking place over the month that are geared towards the summer school holidays in Cape Town:

Yoga4Kids Yogart January Holiday Workshop, Rosebank – 10h00 – 13h00 on scheduled class days. Contact Susie on 082 681 9624 for bookings and details.
Strawberry Picking @ Mooiberge, Stellenbosch – runs throughout summer holidays. Price varies per kilogram of berries picked, and the farm is open from 09h30 to 16h30 daily. Contact +27 (0) 21 881 3222 for details.
Cape Town Science Centre Summer Workshops, Observatory – special programme for holidays, with year-round activities also offered. R38 per day or R33 per child for groups of 10 or more that book ahead. Open Monday to Saturday from 09h00 to 16h00. Contact +27 (0)21 300 3200 for bookings.
Hansel and Gretal @ The Baxter, Rondebosch – ends 11 January. Tickets available at Computicket, with various show times.
Snow Play Park @ Canal Walk, Milnerton – up until 5 January. Highlights include a 21m Ice Cream Whirl Slide, a magical Snow Globe and more.
Cape to Rio Yacht Race, Waterfront – 3 & 4 January

Kenilworth Karting, Southern Suburbs – kids under 16: R70 for 16 – 10 laps or R100 for 20 laps; younger kids: R25 for five minute short ride. Open daily from 10h30 to late (junior track closes at 17h00). Contact +27 (0)21 683 2670 for details.
Butterfly World, Cape Winelands – wide range of butterflies and insects in a sub-tropical environment. Prices – adults: R48, kids: R28. Open daily from 09h00 to 17h00.
Warrior Toy Museum, Simonstown – beautiful display of toys, dolls, trains and other playthings through the ages. Open everyday except for Fridays, with entry of just R5 per person.
