Hot days, rainy days, cloudy days and windy days… the weather in June seldom stays the same. This is what makes Cape Town winters so unique – you will never have to worry about getting stuck indoors for days on end and the variation keeps things interesting throughout the month. Towards the end of June, you will even have the chance to see snow out in Ceres!
Cape Town is known for its mild Mediterranean climate, which offers hot, clear summers and cooler winters that are still very mild in comparison to the colder northern hemisphere. The city is also known for its wide variation in weather conditions during every season. In summer, this means the occasional rainy day amidst a week of solid heat. The varied climate really shows its benefit during winter however, bringing plenty of warm days to compensate for its colder days.

Typical Climate Conditions
21 June marks the official winter solstice, however the start of June signals the beginning of winter for most locals. Rainy days begin to be more frequent, with strong winds making things stormy. The good news is that the cold fronts generally do not last for very long. Many mornings may start out overcast and gloomy, only to turn clear and sunny by midday.
Clear days are typically mild and pleasant, making them perfect to be outdoors. As the sun does not beat down as hot as it does in summer, it is often warmer to be outside in the sunlight during June. The famous ‘table cloth’ can often be seen on top of Table Mountain during June, with huge white clouds cascading down the slopes. The Cable Station does not operate when the weather is too cloudy or wet, so be sure to plan your trips up the mountain for clear days. Scuba diving and shark diving are both excellent during June, with good visibility on overcast days (that is as long as the winds are not too strong).
Towards the end of June, snow begins to fall on the mountains outside of the city. Ceres is one of the most popular places to see the snow, with a lovely hour or two’s drive that also offers spectacular views of the countryside.
What to Pack for June Holidays
You will want to bring along plenty of warm things of course, but you can also pack those shorts and t-shirts too. Layering is generally the best way to navigate the varied weather in June, so it is a good idea to have a few scarves and other items that can be removed as the day warms up.
As a final bit of advice – don’t assume that you won’t need to worry about sun protection during winter. Even if the weather seems overcast, the strong African rays of sunshine can still shine through the clouds.
