A Literary Tour To Delight

The decision’s been made; it’s a holiday in South Africa and Cape Town in particular!  The beautiful Mother City as Capetonian’s call this lovely city cradled beneath the giant might of Table Mountain, will be home for the duration of your visit.  So how to choose where to stay?

It’s always difficult choosing accommodation in Cape Town because of the sheer scale of the variety, so I couldn’t resist the opportunity of showing you around my most favourite spots – places you must visit and sights you must see.

The activities on offer in Cape Town are fabulous!  So much to see and do it can become quite overwhelming but here is a literary tour of things to do in the heart of the city and the types of accommodation that you can expect to find close by.

Looking for lively nightlife with some of Cape Town’s leading musicians combining poetry and great food?  Zula Sound Bar is definitely the cool, funky music venue to head for.  Dance till late, then head back to your luxurious city centre hotel no more than a stone’s throw away.

accommodation in Cape TownSophisticated apartments also beckon you into their dramatic embrace, such as Fountain Suites, where the views across the city will take your breath away!

A visit to the Cape Town Stadium is a must for all sports fans, especially football fans.  A venue that I defy anyone to be able to better – after all it’s not every day that you can tour a sports facility so close to the waters edge, yet just moments from the centre of a vibrant city like Cape Town.

Accommodation here is also suitably exhilarating.  Why not try the Taj, a luxury 5 star hotel occupying historical buildings with 21st century hospitality?  You are sure to find the refined Indian reception and authentic Cape Town experience a match winning combination.

The curiously named Pink Flamingo Cinema is another extraordinary attraction you simply have to see to believe!  A snug rooftop open-air movie house set amongst a rooftop trailer park above the legendary Grand Daddy Hotel.  Definitely not to be missed.

Here the accommodation continues with gorgeous rooftop apartments designed for 21st century city living.  Tastefully furnished, they offer the ultimate statement in style and class.

My final port of call today is Signal Hill, the “lion’s rump” of the small range of hills that begins with Lions Head.  There is nothing finer on a summer evening than to gaze across the city lights with a backdrop of the setting sun.  During the day the family-friendly picnic spots are a huge hit with locals and visitors alike.

The booming sound of the Noon Day Gun firing from Signal Hill can be heard all across the city, a reminder of Cape Town’s seafaring past when the firing allowed the ships at anchor in the bay to set their watches.

Below the gun, on the slopes of Signal Hill, the district of Bo-Kaap presents a most colourful face.   Many of the homes have been transformed into guest houses and apartments of a more intimate nature.

Cape Town accommodationHowever, you will also find some newly built boutique apartments, such as 35 on Rose, which are the ultimate in understated luxury.  The balcony and the double floor height sweep of glass windows offer some of the most stunning views in the city.  If you are looking for cool, chic tones with contemporary designs, then this is the place for you.
